Οι “Proud Boys” είναι μια ρατσιστική νεοναζιστική οργάνωση των ΗΠΑ, και τα μέλη της πιστεύουν σε τρία πράγματα: Στη «λευκή υπεροχή» (παρότι έχουν και μη λευκά μέλη, με τον ίδιο τρόπο που στη Χρυσή Αυγή υπήρχαν και κάποιοι Αλβανοί!), τα όπλα και τον Ντόναλντ Τραμπ.
Καθόλου τυχαίο πως ο Τραμπ τους υποστήριξε στην πρόσφατη τηλεμαχία. Όταν ο δημοσιογράφος τον πίεσε να τους αποκηρύξει ως επικίνδυνους, αυτός αρνήθηκε και το μήνυμα του προς αυτούς ήταν να κάνουν ένα βήμα πίσω, και «να μείνουν σε αναμονή».

Οι “Proud Boys” πανηγύρισαν μετά το debate, δεν πίστευαν στην τύχη τους πως θα τους ζητούσε ο Πρόεδρος της χώρας να είναι σε επιφυλακή (αυτοί και τα όπλα τους) για χάρη του:

Εξέλαβαν, όπως ήταν φυσικό, τα λόγια του Προέδρου ως το τελικό ΟΚ για να πολεμήσουν με τα όπλα τους, όταν αυτό θα χρειαστεί (σύντομα, στην περίπτωση που χάσει τις εκλογές):
Καθώς οι αναφορές γι’ αυτούς άρχισαν να πλημμυρίζουν τα social media, έγιναν trending topic. Τότε όμως, σε μια κίνηση ματ (που θυμίζει το σπαμάρισμα των φανς της K-Pop με ποπ βιντεάκια σε ρατσιστικά hashtags), κάποιοι αποφάσισαν να δείξουν ποια είναι τα πραγματικά Proud Boys.
Ο George Takei, θρυλικός ηθοποιός του Star Trek και γκέι ακτιβιστής πρότεινε πρώτος την ανακατάληψη του hashtag κι αυτή έγινε:

Το σκεπτικό πίσω απ’ την «κατάληψη» του hashtag δεν είναι φυσικά να κοροϊδέψουν τους νεοναζιστές ως «γκέι», αντιθέτως, να δείξουν ποιοι είναι οι πραγματικά θαρραλέοι.
Οι ρατσιστές αυτοαποκαλούνται Proud Boys επειδή απλώς γεννήθηκαν προνομιούχοι λευκοι σε χώρα προνομιούχων λευκών. Και τελικά, απ’ ό,τι φάνηκε, μπορεί τα λόγια του Τραμπ να απευθυνόταν στους πολεμοχαρείς ρατσιστές, όμως πλέον μπήκαν σε stand by mode κι όσοι προτιμούν την αγάπη.
